Technical Writer

This is a 30 hour a week position, 10 month contract and the salary is DOE. Located in Sacramento, Ca.

Responsibilities:
1. Research and review application requirements to design documentation that fits the project content and scope.
2. Interview subject matter experts (SMEs) to acquire concepts and procedures to fulfill customer documentation needs.
3. Interface with business analysts, IT analysts, and IT managers to ensure the accurate and timely production of documentation deliverables.
4. Create, edit, deliver and maintain application user guides, admin user guides and technical user guides.
5. Create, edit, and deliver quick guides highlighting application updates or new application releases, providing relevant users with at-a-glance information and procedures.
6. Capture application screenshots and integrate them into documentation to facilitate effective user comprehension and learning.
7. Provide clear, concise and logical steps for navigating software tasks.
8. Translate technical information into language readily understood by non-technical audiences.
9. Assist programmers, database experts, customers and managers in project coordination, including application GUI design, testing, implementation, and training.
10. During the documentation process, and subsequent to the process as required, document software bugs by posting them in the Vault for developers and analysts.
11. Create, edit, deliver and maintain hardware documentation, which may include the use of a digital camera and Photoshop.
12. Create, edit, and deliver professional communications to the entire department, or affected divisions thereof, regarding the status and resolution of technology-related issues.
13. Research, compile, create and edit technology-related news articles for posting on the Technology division Intranet news page.
14. Train Technology division and Probation department staff on software concepts and procedures.
15. Graphic design for logos and other graphics as requested.
16. Design and create application icons for integration into software applications.
17. Update and maintain the application security document to reflect changes to Active Directory (AD) groups.
18. Maintain, update and enforce Technology division UI standards as applications are developed and enhanced.
19. Train admin users on the Intranet and Internet backend application (CMS 400).
20. Resolve Intranet and Internet issues using the CMS 400 tool.
21. Maintain Intranet content for the Technology division, which includes news articles, event notifications, and manuals.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. 7+ years of technical writing experience, which includes 4 years of documenting IT applications for Probation.
2. Expert level of experience with MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Visio, Adobe PhotoShop, Adobe Acrobat, Snag-It (e.g., image capture software), and Michelangelo (e.g., icon creation software).
3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
4. Excellent ability to self-edit and peer-edit documentation.
5. Good at conducting interviews, document interviews, and research to satisfy document deliverables.
6. Ability to work independently.
7. Ability to work with all levels of an organization.
8. Strictly follows Technology division documentation and application standards.
9. In-depth knowledge of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
10. Ability to convey technical information to non-technical audiences.
11. Capacity to train users on software as required.
12. Proficiency in performing error testing on applications.
13. Proficiency in creating visual graphics and icons.
14. In-depth knowledge of Instructional Systems Design (ISD).

Location: Sacramento, CA (some travel to San Jose, CA)
Type of Employment: 4 month contract

As an API technical writer helping the product technology team, you'll create docs that enable third-party developers to innovate on the platform. Your main duty will be to document commerce services, such as inventory and catalog management, search, fulfillment, and/or other services. Your audience will include novice and expert engineers, architects, product managers, hackers, affiliates, and merchants. You'll write API reference docs, explain business and technical concepts, and describe functional details of our products. At times, you'll juggle multiple projects and deliverables.

Primary Responsibilities:
Write API reference, conceptual, and task-oriented docs for a variety of commerce services
Personally test services and capabilities that you document, to ensure doc accuracy and completeness
Create XML, JSON, and/or REST samples to include in docs
Demonstrate that you understand the technical and business needs of your customers
Contribute to doc and product usability testing with third-party developers Participate actively in doc and product planning discussions

Qualifications:
We work closely with technical support, product management, architecture, engineering, QA, and evangelism teams, as well as with customers. While our docs cover more commerce topics than technology topics, we need to be reasonably technical in order to communicate effectively with our stakeholders and audiences, and in order to use the products ourselves.
The ideal candidate has all of these technical qualifications:
Experience designing, writing, and usability-testing API reference docs
5+ years experience writing docs for developer audiences
Able to articulate basic concepts and uses of Web services (WSDL, XML, SOAP, JSON, and/or REST)
Basic understanding of HTTP request-response protocol
Basic understanding of W3C XML Schema (XSD)
Basic ability to read and modify code (e.g., JavaScript, PHP, Python, Perl, ASP, C#, or Java)
Able to articulate basic database concepts at a conceptual level Comfortable authoring in HTML and XML using plain-text editors (no WYSIWYG)
Experience with Adobe FrameMaker

Nice to have:
Experience authoring in Drupal or similar CMS
Ability to create new apps from scratch
Experience writing docs that will be translated into other languages (L10n)
B.S. or higher in EE, CS, or equivalent

Mandatory Qualifications:
